독립 온라인 레코드 스토어 Uou Records는 2025년 10월 14일, 대만 기타리스트 Ying-Da Chen의 다섯 번째 앨범 《Live Without Irony》를 통해 레이블 첫 공식 유통작을 발표하게 되었음을 알렸다.
앨범에서 탐구되는 대담한 아이디어들은 Chen이 2021년부터 2024년까지 뉴욕에 머물던 시기와 깊이 연결되어 있지만, 실제 작곡은 10년 넘게 함께 활동해온 대만의 쿼텟을 위해 구상되었다.
Ying-Da Chen Quartet은 대만에서도 독특한 존재다. 멤버들은 전통 재즈와 일본 프리재즈의 고전들에 깊이 매료되고 훈련받았지만, 동시에 의도적으로 미지의 영역으로 나아간다. 서구 음악 언어를 기반으로 하면서도, 대만이라는 복합적이고 다층적인 환경 속에서 살아가는 음악가들만이 만들어낼 수 있는 음악을 들려준다.
대만 골든 인디 뮤직 어워드에서 인정받았던 이전 네 장의 앨범과 달리, 이번 작품은 화성과 멜로디의 경계가 더욱 흐릿하다. 그러나 오랜 협업을 통해 형성된 밴드의 호흡은 음악에 더욱 강렬하고 견고한 서사를 부여한다. 또한 Chen 특유의 이펙트 페달 사용은 재즈 기타의 전통적 경계를 허물며, 억압과 분노, 불안의 감정을 강렬하게 응축해낸다.

Uou Records, an independent online record store, is proud to announce that it will mark a major milestone on October 14, 2025, with the release of its very first distributed title — Live Without Irony, the fifth album from Taiwanese guitarist Ying-Da Chen.
The bold ideas explored on the album are deeply connected to Chen’s residency in New York during 2021-2024, yet the compositions were conceived specifically for the quartet that has collaborated in Taiwan for more than a decade.
The band, Ying-Da Chen Quartet, is a unique presence in Taiwan. Its member are both deeply drawn to and trained in traditional jazz and Japanese free-jazz classics, yet they deliberated venture into the unknown, using Western musical language to create music that could only emerge from musicians living within Taiwan’s complex and multifaceted environment.
Unlike their previous four albums — each recognized by the Golden Indie Music Awards in Taiwan — this records features comparatively blurred harmonic and melodic lines. Yet the quartet’s long-standing collaborative approach gives the music an even more compelling and robust sense of narrative. Furthermore, Chen’s distinctive use of effects pedals not only breaks the conventional boundaries of jazz guitar but also binds all the musical elements together, culminating in a powerful expression of repression, anger, and unrest.
The six-part Prioritization Suite reimagines what is deemed essential on today’s “path to success”. This hierarchy carries an undercurrent of cynical satire, blending elements of both comedic and tragic vulgarity. Yet within the music itself, one senses the artist’s struggle against this very ordering.
The first movement, Beauty, erupts like a colossal meteor crashing down, opening with a devastatingly tragic and heroic statement. as if viewed through a wide-angle, panoramic lens. The second movement, Money, conveys a sense of relentless pursuit, further developing the group’s post-Coltrane-inspired approach — not to be overlooked is Minyen Hsieh’s masterful performance.
Other movements reveal distinct approaches: Brains employs a minimalist compositional style; Thick Skin exemplifies a musical approach that demands the shameless audacity often required of serious jazz players; and Perseverance depicts the relentless climb toward a peak, only to culminating in an ironically mundane finale. Within these conceptual frameworks, the quartet delivers a musical that is both conceptually rich and deeply enjoyable.

Even after his studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and his residency in New York, what remains most influential is his life in Taiwan and his reflection on contemporary existence.
